It’s not easy being a single mother

Have you ever thought why moms hide their feelings and their emotional breakdowns in front of their children? We actually haven’t seen this face of our mothers, we have seen them strong, happy, and courageous all the time. But, even they have their emotional needs and they might breakdown some time. So, moms, you don’t have to hide your feelings, show them, express them with your children, you would feel much better.

But, we know moms will never show their emotional side to their children as they want their children to see their happy face all the time. For a single mother, her kids are everything to her. Her kids are her only support and she would anything for them and it’s the support that had strengthened the relationship of a lot of single moms with their children.

A working single mother covers all the financial situation to take care of all the household and her kids’ needs. A full-time job, taking care of the children and house on a full time basis drains her physically but she does not crib about it. And playing a double role of parenting is not as easy as it sounds. A single mom has to struggle daily to provide twice the love, twice the care, twice the support, and twice the understanding. They have to play both the roles with perfection, especially in a society where still men rule.

Even the society does not support single mothers, instead, they look at them with thoughtless questions in mind like “Who’s managing and running the house for you? It must be really difficult to handle everything without a man, right? Why did you separate? Are you or your husband seeing someone else? Uff, these questions that I don’t think anyone would want to even think to answer.

These people are more worried when you come home late and if you have a male friend, then it’s not going to be easy for the single moms. They will raise their eyebrows and see you with a weird expression. They think it’s not right to stay out late or travel alone or hang out with male-friends. But, I don’t know why are these people more interested in others’ lives? Why don’t they make their lives better?

Those who don’t know how a single mother’s life revolves around every day, here is a small picture of it.

Single mothers have to attend meeting with the teachers for the kids, stay late to check on their kids, help their kids with assignments and projects, pay their school and extra-curricular fees, do the laundry, buy grocery, pay bills, head to work and work much harder to lead a happy life with her kids, find the best schools and colleges for her children, plan vacation, manage time to spend with her children, see that her children do not miss out on anything, prepares them for future, and also she needs to answer to the world for nothing. She does not have a single minute to spare for herself, and the world needs an answer…

The world is full of challenges and being a single mother is not a life full of struggles but a journey of strength.

There are a few disadvantages as a society do not accept us whole-heartedly, we are seen with questions and there is a time when you feel the need of someone to stand beside you with whom you can share everything and share the emotional connection.”

A single mother might feel overwhelmed and unsupported but she does not stop and keeps working to lead a better life and make a safe place for her children and shower them with more love and care.

We salute every single mom for giving their kids the best life, education and what they deserve or even more. We are proud of these women who have accepted all the challenges and faced the society with their head held high. You do not need to answer anyone. You are the real heroes!

We salute you for being strong, and for all the sacrifices that you have made. We salute you for the times you wiped away your tears. The times you forced a smile just to make your kids happy and the times you seldom complained. The times you have struggled to make everything perfect. You are brave!

Stories behind the Celebration of Akshaya Tritiya

There are many stories behind celebrating Akshaya Tritiya. A few of the popular stories are below:

1. It is this day when Treta Yuga was commenced. The Treta Yuga is the second Yuga and is considered very important as Lord Krishna’s sixth incarnation, Lord Parsurama was born in the form of Vamana.
2. Lord Ganesha and Ved Vyasa started writing the epic Mahabharata on this auspicious day.
3. This day also marks the birth of Goddess Annapurna
4. On this day, Lord Krishna bestowed wealth on his poor friend Sudama who had come to his rescue for help.
5. According to Mahabharata, Lord Krishna presented “Akshaya Patra” to the Pandavas while on their exile. He blessed the Pandavas with this bowl that would continue to produce unlimited food that would never leave them hungry.
6. It was on the day of Akshaya Tritiya that the River Ganges descended from heaven on earth.
7. On this day, Lord Kubera worshipped Goddess Lakshmi and thus was assigned the name “God of the Treasurer”.
8. In Jainism, this day is celebrated to remember Lord Adinath, their first God.

Customs on Akshaya Tritiya

1. On this day, many people in Southern parts of India are involved in buying gold as it is considered to bring good luck and fortune. As such, buying gold is believed to be pious on this day.
2. The devotees worship Lord Vishnu on this day and keep a fast the entire day. The devotees are also engaged in making donations and charities in the form of distributing food items like ghee, oil vegetables, fruits, rice, pulses, and clothes to the poor.
3. In Eastern India, Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated in a different way. This day marks the first ploughing day for the upcoming harvest season. Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi are worshipped before starting a new audit book for the next financial year. This is known as “Halkhata”.
4. Many people take a holy bath in The River Ganga and making donations on this auspicious day.
5. Jains complete their year-long tapasya and end their worship by drinking sugarcane juice.
6. The devotees of Lord Krishna embalm the deity with sandalwood paste and worship Lord Krishna and is completely devoted to make the Lord happy. This signifies that they by worshipping Lord Krishna on this day would bring growth and prosperity which will never stop.
7. People also worship horses on this auspicious day, the horse is considered to represent command and energy. Performing ‘ashwa puja’ on this day blesses the worshipper’s home with mental peace and positivity.

Significance for couples

In South India, Goddess Madhura got married to God Sundaresa (an incarnation of Lord Shiva) on this day. Therefore, the couples who get married on the day of Aakha Teej are believed to be blessed with eternal prosperity and bliss. Akshaya Tritiya always sees an exceptional rush in the number of marriages taking place in the country.

In many states, mass community marriages are organized under a single mandap on the day of Akshaya Tritiya to help the brides and grooms with financial means to have a decent wedding with all religious splendor.

Charities to be done on Akshaya Tritiya

1. Jal (Water) Daanam: One can offer jal (water) to Brahmins with betel nuts and give them dakshina.
2. Vastra Daanam: Vastra means clothes, donating clothes to poor or old-age homes, orphanages or to any need persons would be one of the best charities and donations done on the day of Akshaya Tritiya.
3. Buttermilk Daanam: Offering buttermilk as a charity blesses individuals with the attainment of knowledge.
4. Kumkum Daanam: Donating Kumkum blesses the people with higher status in life and women are blessed with their husband’s long life.
5. Chandana Daanam: Donating sandalwood, in any form protects the donors with untimely accidents and auspicious.

You can select yourself, what kind of donations you want to do on this auspicious day. Donate anything that you like, but donate! If you don’t believe in these stories and rituals, think you are donating it for a good cause. And you will realize how good you feel after donation.
