6. Three-course meal and Saffron buns, Sweden

Christmas dinner in Sweden is served as a three-course meal, knows as “Julboard”. The first course includes fish, pickled herring, the second involves Christmas ham along with sausages. And the last meal covers metaballs and potato casserole called Janssons Frestelse.

As we know without dessert, no meal is complete. So, the Swedish prepare saffron buns, it’s a popular rice pudding, yellow in color as saffron is used. Saffrons buns are served to the family by the eldest daughters, by tradition. But, you sure can try your hands making these sweet saffron buns.

7. United States

Christmas dinner in the US varies from one household to the other and it is generally similar to that of Thanksgiving. The meal generally includes ham and turkey with different stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, and vegetables. Christmas cookies and pies are equally popular among the US people. There is plenty of booze-spiked eggnogs as well to wash it all down.

8. Portugal

The Portuguese fast on Christmas Eve, following the Catholic tradition. On the day of Christmas, they prepare Bacalhau, or salt cod which is a main staple Christmas dinner. Some of the desserts served are biscoitos de natal-Christmas cookies and leite de creme-an egg custard.

The Kayan tribe basically belongs to Myanmar. But many of them fled to Thailand and were set up in refugee camps due to political turmoil in the late 80s between the Karen National Liberation Army and military dictatorship in Yangon.

It took no time for the Kayan tribe to become a tourist attraction. You might be wondering how the tribe can become a tourist attraction. Let’s dig into detail.

Why Kayan women wear Brass coils around their neck?

Starting at the age of five, the women of the Karen tribe (also known as giraffe women) traditionally wear brass coils around their neck, and more are added as they get older. The brass coil pushes the collarbone down to compress their rib cage. This gives the impression that their neck is long and stretched. However, it is not so. There are several theories that justify this tradition.

One of the theories accounts that the brass rings were used to make the girls unattractive to the slave traders who were hunting them down while others say it was a sign of beauty and wealth. And some say it’s a part of their tradition. However, many young girls have stopped wearing these rings these days.

These women are also known for their incredible weaving skills which is done on a back-strap loom. People say the villages give these women a paid opportunity to retain their culture as their non-residential status limit employment opportunities for them.

Why Tourists visit to Chiang Mai?

Many tourists travel to the villages in North Thailand every year to see the so-called “Giraffe Women”. This tradition has become a great source of income for the local government and also an opportunity for the women to sell their crafts to the tourists.

However, the tourists are mostly interested in clicking photos with these women instead of buying their artisans. The visitors take pictures with these women like they would with a piece of an art or stare them in an astonishment.

I wonder how these women must feel when people take photos of them. Don’t they find it disturbing?

For some tourists, seeing the long neck women may seem like just another tourist attraction as many tourist agencies stop by these villages just to see these women. The visitors pile out for a quick photo opportunity with exotic-looking women before tour guides shuttle the group to the next destination.

It has become a lucrative tourist spot!

Why these women are not allowed to leave the village?

According to the research, Kayan men and women are not allowed to leave the village without a Thai ID card as they are Burmese refugees and they cannot apply for one to build up their future elsewhere. They were not even allowed to go to schools or hospitals. However, their situation is getting better slowly but yet they do not have permission to leave.

From a young age, Kayan girls are deprived of basic facilities. They have little to no access to schools, water, electricity, and health care, and those with coils around their neck will never get to experience life outside these makeshift villages.

When the tourists visit these women, we see their happy and smiling faces, but we don’t know what the fact is-these women might be happy to see the visitors and welcome the chance to boost their income by selling their crafts and meeting people from other parts of the world. The other case may be even if these women are not happy, they do not have any option but to be a piece of an art and get photographed by the visitors and earn income.

Ethical or not to visit these women

This makes me think how ethical is it to visit these Kayan women. As long as they are exploited in this guarded village and not given their rights to make their own decision.

I feel travel is about enjoying the moment, making connections with people from different cultures. We should create a symbiotic relationship with the locals instead of treating them as a spectacle to exploit. As such while visiting Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai the tourists should talk more to these women. Get involved with them. Ask about their crafts, and make them happy about your visit instead of just taking a snap and leaving.

The aspects surrounding the lives of these Karen women in Thailand are controversial. So it is difficult to pick the right or wrong attitude towards visiting this Thai fascination.

4. Chandlai Lake

The first thing that comes to my mind about these islands is astounding, colorful, and vibrant, nightlife scenes and the beaches sparkling with the best nightlife options that include sundowners places, disco, lounge areas, and nightclubs.

Here are some activities that you should not miss out while traveling to Thailand.

Nightlife in Krabi

If you are looking for a pulsating nightlife and an exciting atmosphere, Ao Nang Beach in Krabi is a good place to start. There are many lively bars with amazing music and delightful cocktails that will make it difficult for you to stand still.

Center Point at Ao Nang is the best-loved nightspot where you will see all the best music and crowd. You will surely love the place. I suggest going straight away to the Center Point after relaxing at the beach and enjoy your night. Trust me, you will fall in love with the place if you are a party animal.

Soi Bangla Road, Phuket: Where life begins after sunset

2. Carry a pocket map

A pocket map will show you the major attractions and how to reach them by any transportation. When I was traveling to Vietnam, I made sure to carry a pocket map with me every time I went out to explore and it helped me a lot and exploring the city was super easy. You can trust on Google Maps but before that you need to trust on your smartphone battery. One more thing, GPS and smartphone network doesn’t work everywhere.

3. Travel Light

Always travel light! Do carry all the essentials but leave space for knickknacks you pick up. And do not carry too many snacks, enjoy the local cuisine instead!

4. Don’t be scared of talking to strangers

If you are traveling solo, mingle with other tourists as well. There will be so much to learn from their perspectives and experiences. You will tend to meet people from different countries and cultures.

5. Carry your passport always with you and do not keep all your cash at one place

Keep your passport in a safe place, ideally in a pouch in a secure bag and while you go outside of the hotel, do leave some cash in your suitcase safely so that in case or in worse situation you will have some cash left with you.

6. Travelling first time ? Carry enough foreign exchange

Cash is the easiest to work with and is easily accepted everywhere. Keep a lot of change, you will need it. And if you want to shop in big stores, keep an international debit card or credit card, totally up to you.

7. Overbooking

With the excitement for the first trip, you might book everything in advance be it hostel, hotel, transfer, breakfast, lunch, dinner. In this way you don’t have to worry much about anything, right? But booking everything will not make your trip flexible. You should leave some space in your itinerary to change and take opportunities as they present themselves. This way you will be able to explore more and enjoy more otherwise you will have to be fixed with your bookings.

8. Do not plan everything with the travel agent

There are various online sites through which you can plan the trip yourself. However, we still depend on travel agents for the safety purpose and don not take any risk. But that does not mean that you need to book everything with the help of travel agent. Book some part with the travel agent and some by yourself. This will help you in saving!

9. Trying to see everything

You would want to see each and everything, you might want to tick as many boxes as possible. But that’s a mistake. Trust yourself that you will travel again. Instead of trying to see everything, you will not be able to enjoy one spot, rather relax and enjoy one spot and move onto other. This way you have lots of fun and adventure.

10. Do not forget about Insurance

You will surely need insurance. Even if you are just planning to stay in a resort and relax, you will need one! You never know anything can happen, your bags might go missing, you might get sick or any one of a million other mishaps might occur while you are traveling. So, why take that risk? Trust me, you will be pleased to spend that small amount on your insurance policy.

11. Take Photos and Videos!

Do not forget to take photos and videos for your memories but at the same time do not let your phone or camera get in the way of your experience. Do not use much of your phones while traveling rather enjoy the moment and cherish the new experience. Just take photos to hold onto the memories and if you like writing, you can write about your experience at the end of the day. Photo & videos will remind you glory of travelling first time alone.
